Radar Modernization Process

The MTPS-43 is the result of the Invap Radar Modernization Process (PMRI) on the Westinghouse TPS-43 Air Defense 3D Tactical Radar. This system update has achieved the proposed objectives:

Extend the system lifetime for a period of at least 15 years, by replacing its obsolete components with modern, redesigned, and functionally equivalent parts.

Improve the overall availability of the system, minimizing service interruptions due to components failures.

Reduce preventive and corrective maintenance costs.

Improve the original capabilities of the radar, optimizing its performance and incorporating new functionalities.

Allow remote operation.

Integration of radar information into a modern command and control system.

The basic PMRI includes updating all the electronic equipment contained in the operating shelter. The antenna, cabin structure and auxiliary equipment can also be restored at the customer's request.

The scope of the PMRI update for the TPS-43 can be divided into four main groups.

Transmitter

The original tube (Twistron or Klystron) still in production can be reused or a solid state amplifier can be provided, while the pulse modulator, which is the most frequent cause of failure, is replaced by a modern solid state drive.

Central radar electronics

The radar signal processing, IF receiver, frequency generation, timing, CCME, and self-diagnostic modules are completely removed. They are replaced by state-of-the-art digital equipment designed by INVAP. Some new functional elements are added, such as the Monoradar Processor, which delivers merged primary and IFF radar tracks, or the Control Unit, which allows the configuration of the radar, the control and the display of the system status through a tactile interface.

IFF

Original IFF cabinet and equipment are removed. INVAP offers multiple options for this replacement, including an in-house system and other third-party alternatives.

Configuration, control, diagnosis and operation of the radar are done through simple and intuitive graphical interfaces. This dramatically accelerates the staff learning curve, minimizing the time and costs of deploying and commissioning new units.

Flexible interfaces and standard Asterix data output provide seamless integration to multi-sensor command and control systems.
